(500) Days of summer is not your average movie. In fact its not average in any way. Its not the boys meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after movie. Its the opposite – boy and girl meet, boy loves girl, girls not sure, girl leaves boy.
I love everything about this movie. It doesn’t conform to the mainstream love stories out there and is told in such a back to front way that you never know what will happen next.
Here are a few of my favourite moments, i’ve tried to keep them in order they appear in the film!
1. There are two types of people in this world….
Possible one of my favourite opening scenes from a film….
This is a story of boy meets girl. The boy, Tom Hansen, grew up believing that he’d never truly be happy until the day he met the one. The girl, Summer Finn, did not share this belief. You should know up front this is not a love story.
This pretty much sets the scene for the entire film. Its refreshing to watch a film that doesn’t conform to the generalisation that it is the girl always longing for the boy.
2. Staff Karaoke
This scene made the cut for 3 reasons! 1. The moment Tom lights up when he finds out Summer had been asking if he was coming. 2. The discussion between Summer, Tom and Mackenzie about being happy alone and the complications of relationships 3. The singing! Nancy Sinatra and The Pixies!
I have to admit, when I go to Ikea I like to pretending i’m at home in the rooms! Opening and closing the cabinets and sitting on the sofas (I live on the edge). The flash backs between past and present Ikea shopping trips add a sadness here.
4. The fountain scene
I can’t listen to this song without picturing this. When i’m happy I want to burst out singing this and I would definately work this into any future wedding somehow…. The video’s below for your perusal! Crowds of random people congratulating Tom on his night with summer. Even the cartoon birds dont seem at all cheesy! He is a very happy man!
5. ‘I hate this song!’
I love this scene! How often does a song come on and it immediately reminds you of something from your past, a person a situation? That song is immediatly tainted and will never have the same meaning again. Tom is on the bus when a song that reminds him of Summer comes on. He screams ‘I hate this song’ to a bus load of people. Its funny. Thats the scene.
This usually happens to me in the car, and its usually the ipods fault. It gets screamed at ALOT. Damn people ruining songs for me….
6. The roof top
A sad scene but one that couldn’t be missed. Expectations vs reality. Tom goes along to the party with the expectation of reuniting with Summer, however when he arrives Summer has an engagement ring. Summers moved on and Tom hasn’t.
Where it all comes full circle.
I love this scene. The questioning of fate and coincidence. Maybe things all happen just the way they are meant to, we just dont know it until we look back later.
Googling for this post I came across the first draft of the script! You can check it out here
Im going to do a post in the future about the lovely Zooey Deschanel clothing in the movie (its so lovely!) and the music (So catchy and original!) if you have any favourites? I would love to hear them!
And to finish…the lovely Hall & Oats
